To those non-USA speakers of English (for we have to remember not everyone in the world knows American idiom) -
If you haven’t figured it out by now, saying that you’ll “open a can of whoop-a$$” is an even more colloquial way of saying you’re going to “kick some butt” ie, beat or overpower someone, or, in this case, win the game.
It’s a bit crude. You don’t say it in polite company (though a sportscaster might use it jokingly on television,) which is why the coach doesn’t like little girls to say it.
