“Underfoot?” I thought that meant in somebody’s way. Doesn’t Adam mean “under way” or “afoot”? I know, awfully picky for so early in the morning.

To those commenting on “underfoot”—yes, that is the wrong expression, but why do you assume that the writer does not know this? Surely Adam is being portrayed as a malaprop?

How is “underfoot” wrong? It’s allegorical, but he’s saying that trick or treating is here and you’re in the middle of it.
