When I start a week with a visual gag, you can usually bank on my not having an idea and just throwing something out there to get a strip done. Playing around with the “blackout” frames on yesterday’s strip it occurred to me that if one of the characters didn’t mention to whom they were talking, you would have no idea who was speaking, and if I didn’t establish by position or direction of the speech balloons when their identities were revealed that no one would be able to track which character was speaking at any given time. So I got a little existential.

Tim Rickard of Brewster Rockit has all-black panels every know and then, explaining that they’re a gag for cartoonists who are a bit tired for drawing. Although that shouldn’t be an issue for PS — maybe who are tired of collageing.

As if the usual artwork of this comic were such a burden. :P And “Third base” could mean “I don’t know” or “This is a good time for us to get to third base, honey.”

So what Pab is saying is that even he doesn’t know who’s talking. Perhaps he could turn the lights on for a second and take a peek.

I know that story well, and have learned the same lesson as Kelly. As I said, this one was borne of having no concept for Monday’s strip and going for a cheap visual gag, and the concept ran away with me.

For a while on my Web site, I had a cartoon called Blackout Funnies, which consisted of nothing but black panels with dialogue balloons. I figured it was one way for somebody with no drawing ability to make cartoons. (I have since found better ways.) After 100, I felt the feature had run its course and I moved on to other things.

I don’t think it matters who’s speaking. I just hope that Vicky’s managed to find her way back to the floor.
