I remember those! When I was in the band, our first uniforms had shako hats. They were a lot of work to put together, with the plume and spats over our shoes.
They were made of heavy, wool material and were hot as blazes at the start of the year, but when October and Novermber rolled around, they got chilly, because there were plenty of vents for the wind to whip through. I was glad when we got different uniforms that were more solid.
Interesting exposition. 峠 (qiǎ in Mandarin) caught my attention because there are only a few hanzis (I added that ‘s’ to tweak your nose, the subject of how to pluralize foreign loan words could get me a dissertation or two) which have more than one syllable. Although it’s not in the official roster, I once saw a character which replaced the mountain radical with “woman”, and resulted in shangxia (elevator girl).
Re: Union UndergarmentsIf the whitewater runs in your neck of the woods are rain dependent (as they are in Arkansas), then you paddle a lot in extremely cold weather. A swim in those conditions is not exactly fun (even if you don’t swim, the better the run the more you get splashed).A neoprene wetsuit was once our best defense against the wet and the cold, but since modern technology has given us GoreTex most of us now own and wear a drysuit.Underneath my Kokatat brand drysuit (think “onesie” that costs, if you’re as old as I am, more than your first pickup truck) I wear a fleece union suit. It has titanium flakes to reflect body heat and lots of other bells and whistles. I put it on by climbing/wiggling/squeezing through the neck hole (I’d like to see the Union Undergarments made by The Holmes Co. of 49 Temple Place/19 Kingston Street, Boston, Mass. do THAT)./s/ Rotifer a/k/a Big Wave Dave
Park City is one of Utah’s more cosmopolitan communities. With stratospheric real estate values due to the proximity of the ski resort as well as some oh-so-posh outlying areas, it still has an old mining-town charm despite the massive development that has gone on there over the last 30 years or so. I love going up there at any season of the year.
