    Correct me if I’m wrong, but I think this tradition started because it used to be common to hang up your socks above the fire when they were wet.

    My son has a book about Christmas traditions around the world that mentions the pillow cases. Wolf Emperor is right, the stockings were hung by the fire to dry because people only had one or two pair. So they had to clean them often.

    Plus, even if the socks had holes in them, stuff wouldn’t be as likely to fall clear through as it would in underwear, right? Unless you tied together the legs on your long johns.

    A hole in the toe would go unnoticed once Santa put in an orange. Or Apple. I guess it would depend upon what was in the cellar at the time that could pass as a treat.
