âwhat we have here is a failure to communicate. The restaurant pays your salary, partly from what I pay for the meal. I donât âoweâ you a tip- I give it to you because of the quality of service. Based on that and this incidence, what would YOU give a waiter who was serving you and tried the same thing?â
How REAL (rude) do we want to be today? I have never seen a waiter ask for the TIP first. But in Ziggyâs CARTOON world anything can happen and usually does.
I believe that originally, tips were placed in a jar at the front counter of an eating/drinking establishment. When you paid upon entering, you expected to receive fast and courteous service. If not, I am sure the server did not keep a job for very long. Now days, too many servers are rude or slow. In that case, they should not expect to receive a tip when you pay for your meal. They are very lucky if they keep their jobs.

I believe that originally tips were paid before you were served. The letters stand for âto insure prompt serviceâ.

Wouldnât that be âto ENSURE prompt service (tep)â? Unless of course, the waiter is an insurance agent.

Check snopes⊠TIPS did not originally come from the acronym To Insure Prompt Service, or anything similar.

On a very bad waiter/waitress we would put out 2 cents so they got the point.
