Transcript:
Grandma: "Hope you kids like the gifts we got for you"
Luann: "Wow... a Flintstones pencil box..."
Brad: "Neato. A box of hankies"
Luann: "Open your presents from us"
Grandma: "Oh...toilet water"
Grandad: "Say! Soap on a rope..."
haha isn’t that the truth,, but @baby66boy1 seem to stay trying but it’s always either @Ottodesu or @BikeNBoatN I do give your major props for being so humble and not making something out of it
It really doesn’t matter who posts first…a good ‘zinger’ will always be a good zinger no matter where in the lineup you get to post it.
This cartoon just shows from whom the grandkids got their facial expressions of discontent in the first place…their grandparents. It also shows thet the grandparents have been quite miserly in their gifts to the teens over the years. A gift is a gift is a gift but….a pencil box to a teenager is nothing but miserly. 1994 was not a bad year financially…at least compared to the years since 2008.
Greg really has it down down with what Old People have to wear. Who else could wear an blue plaid blazer like Grandpa’s? My spouse’s cousin’s 90 yo mom wore a bright red one on Sunday.
The problem with most gifts is expecting them to be meaningful. Unless you know that there is something the other person would really like that is within your budget, the whole excercise is somewhat futile, My daughter bought me a journal with a pretty cover and while I like the cover, it would be better if it fit on a CD/DVD because I bought myself Dragon to write my memoirs (I’m slow at writing or typing) and I know full well that I have to use spell checking too.
It’s all preception. What the Grandparents precieve the children will need, and what the children preceive the Grandparents will want. How many pairs of sockes did you get as a kid, and how many times were you giving Grandma a boxed set of hankies? You wanted toys, and Grandma wanted a hundred bucks so that she could breath a little easier (over the bills of her life.) Disappointment? Isn’t Christmas giving full of that? Besides, Greg looks to be about 14 (notice the stubble over his lip in panels 1, 2, and 3,) and LuAnn is about 4 or 5 years younger. When I was between 8 and 12, my choices for gifts were still being dictated by my parents; “No, I don’t think Grandma would want a baseball mitt, son. How about this nice set of hankies?” (BTW No Grandpa in my life. Both had already passed on before I was born.)
I never knew any of my grandparents, but just going back to 1994 makes me somewhat uncomfortable, knowing all that has gone down since that time. I prefer to look forward to Tiffany taking an advanced course in pole dancing or TJ and Ann falling for each other.
Are the grandparents still alive? I don’t remember ever seeing these grandparents before, but this is vintage from before I started following the strip. At any rate, grandma looks an awful lot like Mrs Hornsley (or whatever the name is of the old lady who Brad & TJ now live in the house she formerly owned).
Notice how in the last episode of the current-day strip, Brad is on the phone with Toni and he mentions she’s coming over in an hour? I don’t remember Toni being in the same vicinity as Brad’s parents since Luann’s school musical, so apparently she’s welcome there and Toni and Brad’s mom are friends now? Still waiting for Brad to pop the question…
What would be an interesting development would be if Aaron Hill moved back from Hawaii and hooked up with Tiffany, who he always seemed to like better. Then Luann would have no competition for Quill, and could show Aaron she’s moved on. But then Quill would probably move back to Australia, and since Luann has determined she wants Gunther to be with Maria, maybe Luann would end up with Elvis (Elroy)? There sure seem to be a lot less dating prospects in Luann’s life than my daughters ever had. They had a different guy every week.
My previous post was from my Droid which is hard to type on. Grandparents should be fully prepared to receive gifts of emotional meaning but little relevance or monetary value from their grandkids – they’re young and they’re financially limited. On the other hand, they should make an effort to stay in touch with what would be meaningful for their grandkids, and this particular strip – years old though it may be – illustrates delightfully that many grandparents don’t – even those who are not saddled with senility issues.
Greg’s art is greatly improved (which I guess we all know) since the old strip. I was just seeing the gifts of relations.I had a soap on rope from my brother which was the WORST gift I ever had (a phallic member). Im glad I have no such gift in my memory.
You’re lucky my grandparent’s had six daughters and thirty-one grand kids in total. None of us got Christmas gifts at least I know none showed up at my home. But I love treating myself! lol

We know what to get people in this day and age: gift cards. There is always enthusiasm in those.

Money always hits the spot with teenagers and gift cards are great for old folk especially for their favorite supermarket.

I usually read this strip in my paper. I wandered over here yesterday to see why the strip was a rerun. It’s not listed as vintage in the paper.

T’was ever thus. And we wonder why kids don’t imbibe our wisdom! They can’t even figure out what we LIKE…and we miss THEM, too.

G’ma and G’pa are out of touch, Brad & Luann haven’t learned yet. In either case, though, it is the thought that counts.

I have no idea why the characterization art changed so radically since 1994 and now, but I love how it’s currently drawn.

that ironic sense of humor was always there that is why I like the strip
Scurvy about 13 years ago
Who did the artwork? It doesn’t look like Greg Evans’ usual style… this worries me. Is he okay?
Scurvy about 13 years ago
When this happened to the “Pogo” strip, the wife and son of Walt Kelly drew the cartoon because he was ill.
Scurvy about 13 years ago
Oh, okay… a “vintage” strip. Whew… we hope.
