I don’t like the IDEA of gift cards… but the fact is, there is less wasteful spending done by anyone who got me a gift card. Chances are, I’m buying me something NOBODY else would have thought of with it. A lot of actual gifts sit around gathering dust while the purchases of a gift card get used. So I’m in a quandary about how I REALLY feel about the nasty/nice little things.

This year, I got clothes. That I asked for. I must be old. Of course, I’m also spending a gift card on a new helmet, so maybe I’m old AND stupid.

I hate gift cards. I say just give me cash if you can’t be bothered to pick up a chocolates or hickory farms box. I always end up having to spend more than the value of the card, and usually they’re for stores I would never shop at otherwise, so I end up buying junk I neither need nor really want, just to avoid the store or the servicing company leeching the value of the card in fees.

The best gift cards you can get from your bank. Mine offers them for free, and you can use them anywhere Visa is accepted. It is hard to know exactly what my niece wants anymore. I talk to her regularly, but due to issues with her mother, I have not seen her very often. She loves the gift cards. Personally, I like shopping for myself. That was no-one has to know exactly how large my butt is. :)

@Boots: There are gift card buyers online, usually a percentage of the card, but now is the time to do it when buyers are looking to restock their supplies after selling them at Christmas.

Agreed there. ;-) Personally, I would think she would LOVE giftcards for Christmas… yeah, it’s more shopping, but it’s shopping for YOURSELF! ;-) I’d rather get gift cards than items I had to return to get a giftcard to buy what I wanted… or as you said, than something I don’t want/like and have no gift receipt for. :-s
