I only wish the use of hyphens had been eliminated… I wish everyone could experience what John Wayne had to say about hyphens. It might just be a far better world.
There used to be definite rules on hyphenating but in these days of inventing new words like “physicality” (which is NOT a word in reality) just about anything goes any more. Originally, a combination of 2 words used as an adjective was hyphenated.

I think there’s been decline in the use of the hyphen lately. For example, the hyphen in e-mail and on-line has been dropped.
