Laura: Seems slow for the week after Christmas. Female employee: I know. Maybe people gifted better this year. Laura: More likely they bought all their books online for their e-readers. Female employee: That's depressing. Laura: Let's head over to the Donald Trump section to feel better... Female employee: Right. If he could do it, anyone can.

I still do most of my reading in the conventional method (paper books and magazines), but it was too hard to resist the appeal of (a) a new electronic gadget; and (b) the ability to read in total darkness (no more sleeping spouse disturbance issues).

I have always enjoyed perusing the bookshelves of my friends homes to see what they have read. This worked fine until I commented to one of them about her collection. She replied that she hadn’t read a single book that was on the shelves. The books were only there for decorating purposes. My son when he was in high school took a look at my selection of titles and exclaimed that I had a large portion of the summer reading list he was given. It contains lots of Hemingway, Steinbeck, Somerset Maugham and Raymond Chandler
