    A raft is a platform made from stuff that floats. It doesn’t have to be small like a dinghy, it can be a barge. A boat floats because it’s hollow. It generally has a keel, like a spine, along the bottom center, to help keep the pointy end the direction you’re going. A dinghy is often small enough to need a keel fin, like on a surfboard, to assist in this. Grandpa’s response shows little boating experience.
