Transcript:
Alex: Dad, is it bad the bring up good news on such a sad day? Mike: Of course not, sweetheart. Alex: Then guess who's getting married! Mike: Who's that? Alex: Me, of course! Kim: What? Seriously? Mike: Leo proposed? Alex: Well, no, technically, he doesn't know about it yet. Kim: Technically? Mike: Uh-oh.

Um, what is the “sad day”?
chasches about 13 years ago
@Bill WeinbergThe “sad day” is the funeral of Mike’s mother. This week is a re-run of strips that ran immediately after the funeral.

So why does Mike think, “Uh-oh”? Is he seeing into the future? Is he prescient? What has him worried? Does he think Alex will try to manipulate or somehow fool Leo into marriage?

Why wouldn’t Mike be worried about Leo instead? Leo seems too nice and emotionally steady to hurt Alex. She’s certainly a “catch”, yes, but also an emotional pendulum. Seems Alex is the one who would “hook” Leo (not intentionally) then react and dump him (again not with intent to hurt). Poor Leo has absorbed too much damage already by war.

A week of Doonesbury reruns – yuck.

I’ll be out of the country anyway – no time for the comics for the next two weeks.

An Alex and Leo rerun is still better than a whole lot of other strips new stuff.

One of the first times that I have ever found a “Comments” page to be useful, in any setting: I could not understand the “sad day” reference and the mourning attire until you all explained it to me. …I have a tenuous hold on optimism, but this sort of thing reinforces it, for 2012.

Oh thank heaven. I was afraid Joanie had died and I missed one.
