Cul de Sac by Richard Thompson for January 22, 2012
Transcript:
Mom: "Alice was beginning to get very tired of sitting." Alice: Who is that in the party dress? Mom: That's Alice! Alice: Is she going to a party? Alice: No, she's going to fall down a rabbit hole. Alice: Is that the rabbit? Mom: Yes. Alice: Does she land on him? Mom: No, she falls down the rabbit hole and has all kinds of adventures. Alice: Let's see! Mom: Alice! Please don't grab things! Alice: But look at how she's stretching that dress outta shape! Mom: Okay, we'll read something you know - "Little Oopsie and the Enchanted Sippy Cup." Alice: Who wears a party dress to fall in a rabbit hole anyway?

Alice, listen and learn. Lose the baby book.

Alice has a point. Youâve got to be dressed properly for whatever activity youâre going to do, just like mom keeps insisting on. Itâs not right to have this kind of double-standard in kidâs books. If youâre going to fall down a rabbit hole, you should be wearing jeans, sneakers and a rugged leather jacket with elbow protectors.

Oopsie, our Alice was beginning to get very tired of sitting.Would love to see Aliceâs version of Alice in WonderlandâŠwith all her friends and family filling in for the Wonderland characters.

Stick with Alice in Wonderland, Mom! Itâs so much richer than any Little Oopsie babyish misadventure: expand your Aliceâs horizons with Lewis Carrollâs Alice!

Alice is impatient? Who knew?

Children used to always be given a bath and wear fresh clothes for the afternoon (in my case, all of us were freshly dressed 4 children and myself, before their dad got home from work). Alice in the story was dressed for tea and the rabbit hole was a surprise adventure. And little girls did not wear jeans or overalls.

It is a privilege to Mr. Thompsonâs illustrations of Tennielâs illustrations.

âOurâ Aliceâs attention span is about right for her age. Two-thirds of my children/grandchildren wouldnât sit still for Alice in Wonderland at the age of four; the other third were savants of one sort or another. Petey might have dug it at that age.

A version of THIS Alice going to Wonderland could be interesting. Iâve seen many good versions. The best 2 were a 1985 TV adaptation which had so many of my TV favorites and a recent one that Si Fy channel did â such fun and with more imagination than Hollywood types can do.

So sad, but so true to life.
