After seeing Dawn of the Dead in the movie theatre right after dinner, I can say I swore myself off of gory violent movies permanently. It’s not all it’s cracked up to be, Calvin.

The trouble with instant gratification, it usually lasts only an instant.

Moreover, it could have been more over!

It looks like the reruns from Bill Watterson’s first 9-month sabbatical have ended. Yesterday’s strip was from 1987, and today’s is from 1992.This is also the first Sunday strip where the Syndicate began forcing the newspapers to print the entire thing and not throw away the first row of panels, as many of them had been doing. That’s why there is no first row of panels. Also note that Watterson has numbered each panel, to let the reader know their order.When Bill Watterson left on Sabbatical in May 1991, his last strip had Calvin and Hobbes riding downhill in Calvin’s wagon. Been there, done that! What’s next?

Note that Bill Watterson’s last strip before his sabbatical ended with a refererence to having to wait. When Calvin mentions reading comic books while they wait, this could be referring to the fact that Calvin and Hobbes readers will be reading 9 months of comic strip reruns while they wait.Also note that in today’s strip, when Bill Watterson returns from his sabbatical, Calvin is talking about having to wait in order to get what you want, which is what the Calvin and Hobbes readers have been doing. In today’s last frame, when Calvin says, “Gosh, that was over quick,” Watterson may be pointing out to his readers that he has only been away for 9 months. He may also be expressing his own feelings, that his sabbatical flew by very quickly.

Here is Stephan Pastis on the topic of instant gratification. He is the modern-day cartoonist who draws “Pearls Before Swine.” Like Bill Watterson, Pastis tries to be very original and “break the mold,” avoiding highly repetitive themes. It makes one wonder how long he will be able to continue at this level. This was my favorite C & H strip. I cut out and still have the original from 1987. Although it is pretty ragged. At the time, I thought that Watterson had transended mere “comics”. I still do.

Ah, Calvin. It is all about the journey. Love is star man gazes towards as he walks the road of life.(And marriage is the open manhole into which he falls.)

Wish I had a comic strip of those moments in life that go by so fast, then I …wait that’s memories are for! Hokey Smokes!

In real life, it would be disturbing for Calvin’s parents to let a hyperactive 6 year old go sledding in dangerous terrain all by himself with only a stuffed toy. We tend to forget all that when it’s Calvin and Hobbes, though.

And so Calvin has his first lesson on the brevity of life and utters the words that could well become his epitaph.

It’s not that life is so short but that eternity is so long. [unknown (to me)]

@Sharuniboy: Perhaps Stephan Pastis needs a sabbatical…… I think it’s becoming harder and harder for cartoonists to be original, especially if they are doing children, since now they have to follow both Charles Schulz and Bill Watterson.

Yep. Life in the fast lane is usually over too quick.How cah anyone campare C&H to PBS? It’s like comparing fresh peaches to sour pickles.

Isn’t the cliff brown, not red?

Hitting the gas in the fast lane may not make the journey any better.. Just faster and as the rock has demonstrated come to a crashing halt a lot quicker. All for instant gratification when the rock might have been avoidable by being willing to some times travel in the slow lane.

@Tacopielver: Thanks – I’m always glad to hear that others enjoy the additional strips and information. To me, the main value of collecting them is being able to share them with others. Humor and knowledge kept to oneself, and never used, are not worth much.

If Calvin is only interested in the destination, he’s apt to miss the journey that is life.

Replace ‘Life’ with ‘Love’..same meaning.
