All these paintings of St. Jerome (many clothed; I’m not Catholic, so I hadn’t actually heard of him before this strip), but not this one.Modest enlargement available here
@mabrndt, actually most Catholics are not familiar with many of the saints. There are a few other than the apostles who are known because they are “patron” saints of one or another medieval guild (Duncan is for metal workers, a hobby of mine) and I know of Jerome mostly because it is my birthday, and others know of one or another because naming of a church. My old parish church was an obsure saint (another of 100s of young virgin who were killed). I no longer indulge in “organized” religion; prefer my garden to any church, consider myself a christian but a “recovering” Catholic ;-P
I just noticed that the thumbnails in the upper border are a sequence, so tomorrow’s with 2 men wrestling in an outdoor setting may be a depiction of Cain and Abel, or some other ancient fighters (not in all 6 pages of thumbnails here): http://tinyurl.com/7n4hbrb
Thanks again, mabrndt. It is my mistake as I remembered the ones to the left and I was thinking that if the forum persons who have more wit than I could think up captions, it would make this whole board more fun for everyone! I love that you are able to identify them more easily than I.
