Everybody should be late mergers, using the zipper method. It’s the most efficient way to move cars through a chokepoint. This has been proven by a number of studies. All those people who are politely waiting their turn in a long line while all that asphalt in the soon-to-be-ending lane is going unused? They’re part of the problem, not the solution. Good for you, Barney; you’re doing the right thing.
The real problem is that there are always a few people who leave multiple car lengths between their car and the one in front of them (I’ve seen a 6-car-length gap sometimes). They are messing up the system and you should go in ahead of them.
@calimesajim: So are you saying the comics have no meaning for life? That the only thing worthy of comment is something that will get a cheap chuckle? I reject that, and so, I’m certain, do the authors of this strip.
@marilyn. But, but, he’s done nothing wrong. If all the drivers would fill up both of the lanes, then merge while POLITELY taking turns (the zipper method), then many more cars would get through in less time. A pipe dream? Maybe. Why don’t we start a trend: The next time you see a lane that merges WAYYYY up there, stay in it til the end. Then merge.

Nah, a new line would form of people who are trying to cut in line. Seriously, I’ve seen this happen downtown. Hilarious results.

There seems to be a mixup between the strip and the comments here.
