They do love their JoPa at Penn State. I say give a few dozen big football players, heavyweight wrestlers and the like some baseball bats and ski masks, and have them teach those extremely cruel and very wacky Westboro types a serious lesson in respect. No shots to the head, guys.
Sports Jerk of the Year: Tim Thomas, Boston Bruins for snubbing the White House invitation to honor the Bruins as NHL champions. Tim is rude, confused, and too self important to attend an event to honor his own team.
The SJY contest pokes good-natured fun at foolish behavior, so the name is “sports jerk” not “sports criminal.” Something should still be fun (and not sickening and disturbing to even think about.)
Too many of you are missing the point—-what happened with/at Penn State goes WAY BEYOND general jerkiness! That’s why they said to leave that out of the voting.

I doubt that Joe Paterno would have won. But Jerry Sandusky is the Sports Jerk of the Century, whether they let him win or not.
