Baldo: Dad, I think I might wanna be a mechanic. Dad: Baldo, I don't care what you are... as long as you're good at it. Baldo: Now he's trying reverse psychology to get me to go to college.
Baldo’s just saying he really wants to go to college – but feels he can’t say he wants to go to college. He has to pretend he’s being pressured into it. I suspect Sergio would be all to happy to be Baldo’s “excuse” for going to college – if that’s what Baldo really wants.
I got my degree on the G.I.Bill and part-time work. I never used my degree vocationally,, but I’d never trade those 4 yrs for anything. They expanded my world view hugely. BALDO- GO TO COLLEGE!
I was at a Firestone last night and this 20-something college student came in frantically asking for a quick oil change. Expected to be able to pick it up that same night. Everyone was laughing!!!! Baldo should be able to make a lot of money off these clueless kids.
J.Short: Slacker! I have 14 years beyond high school, plus a few non-credit ones. I have lived a comfortable middle-class life within a few thousand plus or minus the poverty level and survived blacklists and even exile because I have learned how to learn. Education is always valuable, especially if you value freedom.
I was a mechanic for 26 years on anything from cars and trucks to all heavy and light construction equipment. You have to provide your own hand tools and tool insurance most of the time. For the work and hrs you put in, you don’t get paid squat. Go to college and get a less physical and costly profession. I have a desk job now and with a worn out body from those days and make more and have more benefits than I ever did. I have to say though, I did love the work.

And do it knowing they’re doing something genuinely useful to other people…really unlike most college grads.
