Its very easy to see how this can fall into a circular argument, a “hole in the bucket” situation, with the sudden emphasis on the trees.

Yes, but they were both highly experienced skiers who were pushing the limits in dangerous territory. On this slope, Donna might get up enough speed to wound a passing butterfly (if a butterfly could manage the cold weather).
