wow.how could i have missed the fact that her little sister is a sheep?(yes it bugs me when i see people displaying the confederate battle flag as a sign of southern “pride”. i don’t see poor blacks in Alabama flying it.)

I’m reading American Nations : A History of the Eleven Rival Regional Cultures of North America, by Colin Woodard. The origins of the cultures he calls “Tidewater” and “Deep South” are particularly relevant to this strip. I’m only halfway through the book, but it’s already changing the way I think about American history and culture. (Whether his views are correct or not, it’s making me think about these things from an entirely different perspective.)

Disclaimer: I have no affiliation with the author or publisher. I do work for a public library system, so I may have nefarious desires to see people read more books. So you’ll have to decide for yourselves if this taints my recommendation in any way. :-)

The inspiration for the “Southern Cross” flag was the St. Andrews cross flag of Scotland (although that flag was white on Royal Blue) because Scottish rebelion against England. Namely Willian Wallace (a.k.a. Braveheart.)
