In every community, whether it be church, work, or a nursing home, there is always that one individual to whom one does not pose the rhetorical question, “How are you?” because they will tell you in excruciating detail. Therefore, a polite person can find him- or herself “trapped” for an extended period of time.
I used to take a lady home who lived in a nursing home next to my church. Those people were so lonely that they would literally hold on to me to have someone to talk to. It would break my heart.
Talking to a friend about how to get rid of annoying telemarketer calls: She starts off saying, “Oh, I am so glad you called. I get so lonely”. Works for her.
