Drabble by Kevin Fagan for March 14, 2012
Transcript:
TV: After robbing a bank and stealing a car, the suspect led police on a 20-mile high-speed chase. He side swiped several cars and narrowly avoided hitting a group of pedestrians. After resisting arrest, police have finally taken the gentleman into custody. Ralph and June: "Gentleman"???

I frequently respond to similar statements with âThat is NO Lady!â when a woman who has done something bad is referred to as a lady.

I believe this is what they call a contradiction in termsâŠ

I know, RIGHT?!? Thank-you, Mr.Fagan! Drives me nuts! Just say man⊠or suspect! Another one that rubs the wrong way, though itâs more subjective, is when they say the terrorists have âclaimed responsibilityâ. It sounds a little too much like a positive thing. But I guess âclaimed culpabilityâ will never catch on.

Add alledged to the stupid PC list. We watch a crime in progress, the take-down, then have to listen to some talking head natter on about alledged suspect, gentleman was arrested⊠Nonsense to the max.

That was on Fox News and they were referring to a Republican Presidential Candidate.

itâs not âPCâ. Itâs a legacy of 19th century journalism. Over the centuries, journalism has shown a tendency to get viciously personal. To prevent this, and to maintain a semblance of objectivity, and to prevent duels (!) newspapers like the The London Times would refer to any man as a âgentlemanâ, never call someone a âliarâ, and say things like âMr. Hitler appears to have an aggressive foreign policyâ.

So, the perp was a land owner, why are they so shocked by that?
