Funny enough, we just had a discussion like this last week. In order to participate in the Olympics, you can never have been paid for whatever exercise you are wanting to compete in… they consider any payment for the sport as making you a “professional”. I think they made an exception for basketball a while back, but I don’t recall any other exceptions off the top of my head.

Besides, just because you’re a professional in any area doesn’t make you automatically better than any amateur (not paid). ;-)
