Everytime I read this cartoon, I cannot imagine Ms. Larson knowing anyone of this nature!!I’ve hobnobbed with the best, and slummed with the lowest, and have never come across anyone like the Pennys.
G’morning All…. and I do mean All …“Seeing is Believing” was actually on a sign I saw in an optometrist’s office.Optometry humor! And this eye doctor is so warm and friendly. Obviously his first meeting with the Pennys. Before you know it, he’ll be suggesting another doctor…. waaaay across town… or maybe in Michigan. He can’t call me from there — he has no zero on his phone. He has a couple of zeros standing in his office, though.OK, I give Joy a tiny bit of credit…. for knowing enough to be appalled at Burl, every great once in a while. As for Burl…. he plans to try out for the Olympics in 78 years… when he’s over 130.Start taking those vitamins, Burl.I didn’t find Cyclops, but I do see his glass(es.)(And a few English people might understand when I say I’m a big fan of his crossword puzzle.)P.S. Sorry if I haven’t gotten to my e-mail…. I will, honest.
I see people like this all the time. That part of the charm of this cartoon. something I noticed out here in CA our self storage usually have a husband and wife team as staff. and they usually live on site. There seems to be no other staff ,except for the some big name moving and storage which is a huge warehouse. Still Burl might need a hand changing lightblubs
Good Morning all, and don’t worry Susan, I never get to email until after breakfast and with the bird nest I’m late on everything. I was hoping to make the comment about Burl living to that age (much less being in shape for excercise). The other ad with " you see the rest"?
Dry — Yeah, it’s just like those signs in the mall that say “You are here!” Spooooky….As for the coke-bottle-bottom glasses, yes, I think that’s the point of Burl’s little “joke”…. the doc didn’t see them, and he wants them to “holler”…. so he must need and sell both glasses and hearing aids.Marge… yes, bless his little pointy head…must be hard for him to shop for hats, too.
And @ Leaky and Bakumanfan …I’ve known so many …. not so exaggerated or selfish as the Pennys and friends, but enough little touches of Pennyism that this strip makes me both cringe and laugh. How about my Dad, the AF colonel, driving from tire store to tire store in search of the best deal, even though he was driving an expensive car.My Mom loving coupons and trying every new snack in a box or can (though she died before they became quite so chemically enhanced.) My aunt who washed paper plates… the thing is, they were all unPennyishly generous and very smart…. they just loved getting a bargain, even my millionaire great-uncle, who on my visit to him, pointed out buildings he owned, as he drove across town to save 2¢ a gallon on gas, then took me out to an expensive dinner…. and took home a doggie bag.(and unfortunately didn’t leave me a penny.)
Yes drinks in some places are outrageous (especially on a plane) so as I have said my 3oz is gin and I just get ice or a can of tonic and then a little more ice later. I had a rich uncle who was like a Penny and the wedding I had for my youngest son and his bride (I may have mentioned) were going to elope but I wated them to have something nice and rented tables, chairs gold rimmed plates and stemware, bought good flowers at wholesale on Navy Pier (and picked up just on time), made tableclothes and a long swag for a backdrop from a bolt of fabric and made and iced a tiered wedding cake, roasted pork tenderloins and stuff for 70 (max that could be seated to see the wedding). Invited Uncle and Aunt as a formality as they had not attended my daughter’s 1st wedding (countryclub, no limit of space) the prior month. They surprised me by deciding to come and I had to negate a cousin who I really wanted there to seat them (her family with 3 kids lived close so I had her over for a better dinner) and I figured that the kids would at least get something pricy from the richest relative. You would not BELIEVE-their gift was a paperback cookbook printed up by their Rotary Club that they probably had to buy a few dozen!!
Marg — actually, I had a couple of aunts who did the things you describe, and much more…. but my mother was horrified! She did stock up on food bargains, and buy cheap -but-new clothes. She was proud of bargains on NEW things, but had an extreme aversion to anything that smacked of the poverty she lived through in the depression, as one of nine children of an immigrant mother. She hated anything used. When I proudly showed her that I’d learned to darn socks she cried. She and my father were both appallled that my ex husband and I made our living from vintage clothing. When we moved to a bigger apartment, she tried to slip me $20…cos she thought I must not be able to afford to have my beautiful “new” 1930’s red velvet couch taken to the dump.
Leaky and Dazz — actually restaurant soft drinks are one of my pet peeves. Here in CA it’s more like close to $3 for a Coke in a sit-down restaurant and almost $2 in a fast-food place.I don’t drink many sodas anyway… but get a whole burger for $1.50 and pay $2 for a dime’s worth of syrup and carbonated water? NO.And yeah, yeah…. I know you have to pay for the waiter and the glass and all…. and in bars you’re really paying 50 cents for the booze and the other $5 is for the above plus the camaraderie… the atmosphere… well, all that comes with the first drink.
My parents learned from the depression to save napkins and paper towels for multiple use (we used paper napkins for a week each saving their own in the sterling silver initialed napkin ring how funny is that?)

The man says, “Sorry, I didn’t SEE you come in!” He runs a vision center. Did Julie purposely make that ironic?

Of course I AM annoyed that I keep getting ads for everything that old folks might need (and I don’t feel old).

I may eventually need glasses. I have a good pair of sunglasses but reading glasses are all under $20 each.

Leaky actually now it is 8. :-(
Yes they make their money on drinks, and if you ever notice, it’s all mostly ice. They’re making a “killing” on soft drinks! And liquor too!
