Linus is referring to when Daniel was cast into the lions’ den. The king was tricked by his servings (who disliked Daniel because the king liked Daniel) into let anyone not worshipping the king get cast into the den.
Anyway, Miss Othmar would gladly take upon your request, Linus, if you were attending a private Christian school instead of a public, state-operated school.
My cousin’s grace? “Rub-a-dub-dub, thanks for the grub… yeeaaaaaaa, GOD!” Still don’t understand why my aunt and uncle got upset when he did that … LMAO
Of course, God doesn’t honor rote “grace” or rote Prayers (Hail Mary). Christ warned us against it: “But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking.” – (Matthew 6:7 KJV)
We never stood up to address the teacher. I went to a private Catholic grade school for several years in the early 1960s. If we ever did what Linus did we would have gotten whacked with a ruler by one of the nuns. When I went to public grade school several years later, we sometimes stood up, but it was only to sing in music class.
I went to a boarding school in India in the late 60’s/early 70’s. Grace was said before each meal. It didn’t matter if you were Christian, Hindu, Muslim, Sikh or whatever – everyone said grace out loud.“For what we are about to receive may the Lord make us truly thankful. For Christ’s sake. Amen”In fact everyone attended daily chapel and followed the Anglican prayer book and sang the hymns. The school choir was not restricted to Christians – anyone could join and many non-Christians did join.Interesting times … they won’t come again!!
In our school system, the preschool through elementary grades still say grace before leaving the room to go to the cafeteria. Its voluntary. If a child does not want to say it, they just remain quiet during that time
We learned to pray this prayer in church at fellowship buffets and banquets; “Thank you Lord for this food, please bless it to our bodies, and give us nourishment and strength from it.In Christ Jesus’ Name we pray, Amen.”
We never said grace in my grade school (public), but when I was in 4th grade, our teacher had us recite the Lord’s Prayer after the Pledge of Allegiance. No one before or after did…. Standing to address the teacher… not in my grade school years, which were 62 to 68. A kid transferred into my 6th grade class halfway through from somewhere where they did that. He jumped up and stood at attention a couple of times when the teacher spoke to him. We all laughed at him and the teacher told him he didn’t have to do it. Only place I ever saw that was on Leave It To Beaver.

When did kids stop standing while addressing the teacher? Must have been late 60’s/early 70’s?

I remember grace saying “Good food, good meat, good God, let’s eat!”

I’m just thrilled that the censors of political correctness haven’t removed any of the Peanuts strips that mention the Bible.

We didn’t stand to address the teacher in the 50’s! But we were always respectful.
