A change in the internal energy of a closed thermodynamic system is equal to the difference between the heat supplied to the system and the amount of work done by the system on its surroundings.
Or to put it another way, the three laws of thermodynamics are:1) You can’t win (you can’t get more energy out of a system than you put in)2) You can’t break even (there is always a trend toward increasing entropy)3) You can’t even get out of the game (energy is neither created nor destroyed)
Well put, wdpeck. You cant get out more than you put in minus heat loss due to friction and energy transfer. I believe the same principle applies to some card games where the house takes a percentage and payday loans.
When I was his age, the last thing I would have heard out of MY mother’s mouth was “I just cleaned this room”. She would have said, “I told you to clean this room!” (with an expletive or two thrown in)

And this is when cleaning his room (to Mom’s specification) becomes his new chore. ;-)
