Having learned my backetball in the 1950’s in Indiana, I completely agree with the point raised by today’s strip. I include one more observation about things no longer ruled the same way: what constitutes one’s pivot foot. In the old days, if one received the ball while both feet were in the air, the FIRST foot that landed on the floor was the pivot foot (not the second). If one wished to choose which foot was to be the pivot foot, one had to land with both feet simultaneously.
What interesting to me is that most of these rule interpretation changes appear in both pros and college. I guess that street ball has had its effect.
In 1995 the NBA locked out the Refs and replaced them with CBA refs, what resulted was for a short period of time the pros were forced to play basketball, stars as well as subs. It was fun seeing a “Superstar” try to explain to the ref that a starter gets an extra step and that a Star get two.
This subject is almost like the double play in baseball where a fielder makes a swipe at second base and the runner is out, even though the fielder was five feet from the bag when he caught the ball. Also, allowing the catcher to block home plate to keep a runner from scoring fits right in with this subject.
Basketball used to be fun to play, back when you tried to outsmart or outquick your opponent. Players actually tried NOT to foul. Violence is simply, now, what our society wants to see.
Hey CAtransplant. You have it right. I haven’t seen travel called in the lane in pros for decades, college for years & less & less in high school. Dr. Naismith wouldn’t recognize the game he thought he invented
I was playing street ball a few years back with my neighbor’s teenager. When I pointed out that he’d taken three steps during his layup, and that only one was allowed, he said, “No! Look at an NBA game. You get at least three steps.”

Funny, I’ve seen some traveling calls being made in the past few days, along with charging. Palming, not so much.

Health insurance pays for long term coma patients. Or if the person has no insurance plan I guess the government gets the bill.

I started watching the NBA in the 70’s, and as far as I can tell, traveling has NEVER been called in the pro game.
