    Leviticus 20:9

For anyone who curses his father or his mother shall surely be put to death; he has cursed his father or his mother; his blood is upon him.20:10 If a man commits adultery with the wife of his neighbor, both the adulterer and the adulteress shall surely be put to death.20:13 If a man lies with a male as with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination; they shall surely be put to death; their blood is upon them.

the anti gay homophobics LOVE to trot out 20:10, but conveniently leave out all the rest………don’t talk to me about context , mister christian cherrypicker!

Amos 5, last paragraph, hit empty ritual hard, demanding instead, “Let justice sweep down like a flash flood, and righteousness flow like a perennial stream.” Our translations are locked in the King James version of a country that didn’t know the desert and so couldn’t comprehend the power of a visible wall of water roaring down a dry wadi, sweeping away the accumulated trash, or the value of a dependable source of water. Context is more than the setting of the text, but cultural as well.

I’d like to hear the context for the bible telling us to bash babies against rocks to make ourselves feel good. Or, the context for telling women to keep silent. Or the context for telling us we must give away all our belongings. Or the context for all those animal pairs all fitting inside a wood boat. Or the context for genital mutilation. Or ….. (pick about anything from the bible, go ahead.)….. Hey, folks. Read your bibles. It’s not what you’re leading your children to believe it is. People have morality. People do good without god. Religion doesn’t bring morality or goodness. If you didn’t already have morality then how would you know which parts of your Obedience Books to follow and which parts not to follow? See? You already know. You don’t need a ‘god’.

Do you really truly want the context behind the issues you’re raising or is it just argument fodder? Most people when they want something religious “explained” really don’t care about the answer, they are just looking for ammunition to attempt to silence someone else in the argument – opinions notwithstanding. I’d be happy to discuss something from the Bible to someone who has an open mind and would consider a different viewpoint, but I suspect that is not the case here. Replying to sarcasm never solves anything and two (or more) shouting people never change the minds of another. Faith is ultimately a very personal thing between that person and their Creator, no matter what opinions are brought to bear by the public at large. And forum arguments never lead anywhere – it is the personal relationships that change the course of our lives.
