Groening is from Portland, he did ruin some of the fun when he said that. There’s a Springfield in every state of the US.

No matter what Groening might of said, it was clear from all the actual episodes, visually, that it was probably Kentucky or thereabouts. Then again, The Simpsons isn’t noted for continuity of plot.
