In 1933 the Indiana General Assembly officially declared the cardinal as their state bird. Unfortunately, the present government officials all appear to be turkeys. ( Flip Wilson reference) !!
A quick Google shows the (Northern) Cardinal to be the official state bird of seven states; Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, North Carolina, Ohio, Virginia, and West Virginia. A further check shows a total of 888 distinct bird species in the U.S. to choose from. Somewhere in those facts is a point to be made.
The cardinal nearly lost the W.Va. state bird title to the turkey vulture. School children had the task of voting, and some of the more mischievous ones campaigned hard for “cathartes aura.” I guess we’re all glad the cardinal won, but I appreciate the work our vultures do…
