Phoebe and Her Unicorn by Dana Simpson for May 10, 2012
Transcript:
Phoebe: You're a unicorn! Meeting you was supposed to make my life AWESOME. Marigold: Then you should have wished for that. But you wished for me to become your best friend. Maybe you should treat me as a friend, rather than as a prop. Phoebe: You're less idiotic than I assumed. Marigold: Unicorn.

Panel 3 made me sniffle, get choked up and get a lump in my throat. Very poignant and profound.

Maybe there is hope for the kid after all, now Marigold, that’s an entirely different story…

Marigold doesn’t act as her friend, she acts as if she wants to get rid of Phoebe

Ah, but we don’t know the rules for Unicorns. (Did you know that in Tolkien, while good Men who die go to God, Elves who die are reincarnated back into the World—but no one knows what will become of the Elves when the World ends?) Perhaps it is fundamental part of Unicorn nature to be endangered by all reflective surfaces. It’s exactly the sort of thing that one might expect to find in a medieval bestiary.

Phoebe: But friends should do good thing to each other. Make hard choices for a friend and stuff like that. You know, make some sacrifice.
Marigold: Well, in the last story arc of this comic strip you will die but I will sacrifice my life to save yours. I think thats good enough.
Phoebe: Right… WHAT!? I WILL DIE???

Phoebe wished for a best friend. What sort of best friend would Marigold be if she wasn’t willing to teach Phoebe one of the most valuable rules of friendship; You have to be one to have one.

Besides, a true friend is one willing to deal with one’s disabilities like Danny John-Jules’ Disease.

In re: Tolkien. Until you’ve read “The Silmarillion”, you haven’t read Tolkien.
He, himself, wasn’t sure about Orcs.

Wow, now you really got this comic going. Can I have Panel 3 as a 2 by 3 meter poster?

It is indeed part of traditional mythology that only a virgin can tame a unicorn.
“Harry Potter”, for all its glories, has not yet attained to the rank of traditional mythology. Maybe in five hundred years or so.
We do not yet know that Marigold is invisible to others.

I’m pretty sure she tried to make her life awesome by wishing for infinity wishes or money, and you said it needed to be more realistic. Now you’re telling her she should have wished for her life to be “awesome” by some undefined standard? …Are we sure that horn is real?
