Phoebe and Her Unicorn by Dana Simpson for May 14, 2012

Transcript:
Phoebe: So anyway, like I was trying to say at YESTERDAY'S show and tell... This is my friend Marigold. Marigold: Yes. I am now friends with this rather off child. Phoebe: Let's applaud her excellent taste!
Spoiler: In tomorrows strip we find that Marigold is invisible to the mentally balanced. Note that people that carry around an Applause sign are attention seekers.
Has anyone pointed out to Marigold that for a perfect vision of loveliness her horn seems to be a tad off-center? Or is that supposed to be a symbol for something?
Comparisons to C&H are inevitable, I suppose, but ultimately unfair in my opinion as it implies that HN is derivative. I enjoy both strips on similar levels, but try not to saddle HN (no pun intended) with the baggage of comparison. I look forward to following this story on its own terms and in its own universe :)
BTW… having seen Marigold in profile so far, I have to say that her front-on view is adorable :)
If this were Peter S. Beagle’s “The Last Unicorn”, all the class would see is a pretty but otherwise unremarkable white horse. And hear “Neigh” instead of “Yes, I am now friends with” etc.

“If I didn’t see it myself, I wouldn’t have believed it.”
“Yes, Phoebe is rather hard to accept.”

Interesting expression on Marigold’s face. Is there perhaps a mirror in the back of the classroom?? :-)

Pleasant surprise today! Thank you for bucking the cliche of the fantastic creature no one else can see.

Sooooo, does anyone STILL think this strip is a female version of Calvin and Hobbes?
Methinks Heavenly Nostrils has very much found it’s own direction

Phoebe’s much nicer than Calvin, he’s just a sociopathAlso I think marigold is still invisible….

If you think simple asymmetry is a blow to beauty, I suggest you look up a 40s actress named Veronica Lake.

Marigold looks like she’s thinking, “WHY didn’t I just give her the super-powers when I had the chance?”

Didn’t expect that she’d actually appear in front of other people. Is the other shoe about to drop?

Hunnh….I was epecting the Unicorn to be a Hobby Horse or a My-Little-Pony sort of thing
