That is what counts in for personal character. However, you are not doing a kid a favor by passing him in a course he is actually flunking. Flunking tells him his gifts lie elsewhere. You are not doing future employers a favor either. If a kid is doing his best, and still failing all the standard courses, I would rather see effort go to find what they are good at, and make that part of their curriculum. If a kid has a least one subject they are good at, that provides the encouragement to try their best at all the rest as well. Standard academics do not cover all the things people are good at. Read about Mo Siegel, for example, whose gift was collecting and blending herbs. This is why many famous American educators founded “industrial” schools, which empasize skills rather than academics. Liberal arts education is not for everyone.
