My Mothers house garden was over half an acre. (What’s 80 m x 50 m?)I used to have to water it after school before I started homework.Would not have minded the effort (it was ok, kinda Zen and contemplative), but she was always giving it away to impress her friends. A quarter that size would have been too much, even with her copious and wonderful bottlings. Having said all that, I would love to spend an afternoon holding the hose in that garden now.

That’s one thing that I love about the summer, my mom planting her garden in the front yard for everyone in the neighborhood to see and enjoy.

I had on the size of Meemaw’s last year and this year, it’s smaller than Rose’s. It was TOO much work. I still have frozen and canned veggies from last year’s garden.

she rested the blade of the hoe directly on some plants? She must still be learning her limits

The hoe is not touching the ground, if so it would cast a shadow from where it seems to touch the plants. It’s not casting a shadow there, it’s shadow is lost in her own shadow.

A quarter acre of food beats a quarter acre of inedible grass any day of the year.

We have a veggie garden, too. Not sure if it really saves us money, but my veggie taste better. Why? ‘Cause my veggie’s aren’t picked green to ripe for later sale. Yummy…our tomatoes actually taste like tomatoes!

We had a garden while I was growing up. I hated weeding the thing, but oh! The food tasted so yummy every summer and fall, and then eating what was put up during the winter and spring. Now I grow veggies, fruits & herbs in a “container garden” because I don’t have a place of my own to grow a regular garden. Hardest thing about container gardening is keeping the neighbor kids out of the strawberries.

Rose is taking care of a manageable-sized garden this year. That must mean her garden last year was way too big!
