wow…. we are now in what “fanfic” afficionados call Word of God territory, where somebody who was in on the original production passes on beautiful original material and stories for the benefit of the fans. Thank you, Number six! One thing I need complte confirmation of, and would you be aware of the later back-story? The modern Daily Mirror runs a strip called “Mandy”, drawn by the creators of Andy Capp, about the adventures of a tough modern girl and working mum called Mandy. The original conceit was that she was called Mandy Capp and was the grand-daughter of Flo and Andy. But the only way Andy and flo could get a grand-daughter is if Buster grew up and married. Any thoughts on this? And as Mandy is a mother herself, this surely makes Andy and Flo into great-grnadparents and the dynasty continues…
You’re getting scarier and scarier, Number Six! I never realized you were a celebrity cartoonist. (The closest I ever got to art was having a painter friend of mine do my avatar for me, based on my hard-boiled parody of a hard-boiled detective character………) I have a large collection of the old Andy Capp paperbacks but never heard about the Buster comics until just a couple days ago….Are they collectible? (In other words, out of my price range?) Or can I maybe find some running around loose I could actually afford? LOL
Thanks for the insight! I fo have to admit, if I hadn’t been reading the Mirror when the “Mandy Capp” strip first appeared – and I’m sure the paper explicitly said at the tiime she was meant to be Andy and Flo’s grand-daughter, a modern girl for the late 1990’s – then I’d not have made the association. It does bother me that anyone in Flo Capp’s family line would be, for want of a better word, so “cheap”. you could argue that Flo, as a product of an earlier generation of Englishwomen, would consider marriage is for life, take the vows dead seriously, and reflect that even if her husband was a deadbeat like Andy, she’d made her bed and now had to lie in it. A generational thing: a woman young in the 1940’s would have a different outlook on sex and love and marriage to one who is young in the 1990’s and early 2000’s. But even so, would Mandy, as a descendent of Flo Capp, have ended her marriage and/or had a child out of wedlock so readily? Something of Flo would be in her grand-daughter? But I just can’t see it. And she defies Andy’s deadbeat nature by working for a living – when so many other single mothers sem content, for want of a better word, to live on Welfare. Which divocrces her from Andy’s attitude to life, too…

Maybe soccer needs a penalty box, so Andy can return to his role as enforcer in 5 minutes.
