In fact, upon further reflection – There isn’t any carbon in cubic zirconium, but coal is pure carbon. The ability to change matter on a subatomic level is a pretty neat power!
It’s just a trick. Superman can’t really crush coal into diamonds. He keeps low-grade diamonds on him and slips the diamond into his palm when he crushes the coal. Cap can’t afford diamonds so he uses zirconia.
