the hearing aid’s not hearing

He heard you Opal. He’s just not listening.

Nope, the hearing is just fine, it’s the response mechanism that does not.

Just like my dogs, they respond to stimulus they want to — otherwise it’s — huh, you talkin to me…

Can’t blame Earl either…

Known as selective deafness, very handy ailment!

Some guys have it taped. They don’t learn to fix things, they learn where to call to get them fixed.

Anyone remember when you could find a small appliance repair shop that would fix toasters?

…or TVs and VCRs?

…vacuum cleaners and sewing machines?

oh dear heavens – these are my parents.

Oh yes, and by the way Opal, Earl is just letting you know that “we” do not hav a problem, “you” have a problem, see to that yourself.

Ain’t hearing aids great? Especially when you can turn them off.

what’s this “we” thing, kid? don’t you have your own home?

My mom spent $75 for the audiologist to tell her my dad wasn’t hard of hearing, he was just ignoring her.

Opal, just tell him that the TV is broken, that will get his attention.

Opal, don’t interrupt him with chores when he’s reading the funnies. At least wait until he’d finished. And you can fix the toaster and the garbage disposal yourself (or hire someone) if you want it done right this minute.

They talk and say nothing. They also like hearing them self talk.

Toast the bread with the iron & just give the table scrapes to the neighbors dog problem solved while your at it Opal can you iron my paints getting on the wrinkly side again

Opal would be nagging if she said something like, “Earl, you always…” or “Earl, how come you NEVER…” or “You never listen to me.” But in this case she’s simply stating a practical fact/ bringing it to his attention. He would do well to courteously listen.

I wouldn’t mind owning a fix-it shop. The only thing is, parts and labor to fix small appliances cost more than a new unit…
