Big Nate by Lincoln Peirce for June 28, 2012

Cool, look at this rock! Think this is andesite? Hold it, Francis! Hold it! That geology! You're not supposed to talk about school stuff during summer vacation! Okay, okay! Sor-ry! Let's go to the arcade, then. Good. How many games of skee-ball can we play for $3.68? No math! No math!

Nate’s lucky. We actually get homework over the summer where I live.

I was like that too. My best friend, Danny, was like, “Ooh, I’ve got $10 to spend on snacks. How many snacks will we get each?” and I was like, “No MATHS! PLEASE!”. We walked past a bookshop and the book on display was WAYS TO LEARN MATHS

I think it’s a valid question. Gratification can be short-lived. You need to know where you can get the biggest bang for your buck.

I had a student like Nate. Hated math…unless it was baseball stats.

funny how often we use the things we learned is school in everyday life. Also how we thought how worthless those lessons were.

School is partly to learn facts and partly to develop the brain. I use algebra all the time. “If a 298 gram tin of corn costs $1.28 and a 325 tin costs $1.55, which is cheaper?” Math also develops parts of the brain that cannot be measured but help us with our reasoning.

Assuming most arcades at the time take quarters, they can play 15 games in total
