Gritting your teeth only helps when sliding headfirst into second base. At the plate, it’s just a distraction. (In the very early strips, CB was a better player; I wonder what happened.)
Practice! Grog is right. I was into bowling like CB is into baseball. As a kid, I got hung up on making a good show or not letting down the team – rather than just going by myself to the lanes and practicing for hours. Heck, I had free access my freshman year of college to bowl all I wanted, as a team member. I didn’t do it; learned that lesson the hard way.
Gritting your teeth CAN sometimes help with certain things. But in CB’s case, it’s just a distraction, and Linus didn’t just help by calling his attention to it. Happy Fourth, everyone!!!! ;D
Native Americans use various wildlife animals, such as bears, turtles, wolves, etc. to bring forth a message of determination. In Charlie Brown’s case, the Rabbit can be his totem animal. He has to learn, like Rabbit, to kick his feet. That’s just like gritting one’s teeth. Then again, Linus is giving him real good advice, too.

Linus, you can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make him think.

Someone make him a Japanese comic character. It might really help him.

I just think you need lots of extra batting practice, Charlie Brown.

Good ol’ Charlie Brown cannot multi-task.
He can’t chew Bazooka bubble gum, grit teeth, and
swing the bat at the same time.

Hope you had a wonderful 4th July. Did you celebrate?
I was wondering if you would like this song.
I’ve been listening to it for AGES.
