It works the other way, as well. I once had had someone (not a native English speaker, but conversant enough) ask me what “hee-dash” meant. I hadn’t a clue, so I asked him to show me where he came across it (he was reading a newspaper). The word he was trying to figure out was “headache.” Now whenever I come across the word in print I can’t help hearing it in my head as “hee-dash.” :-)
