Happy & Safe 4th Neighbors! As a child, my family had a sailboat and we spent many weekends anchored off of Ocean View in Norfolk, Va. There was an amusement park there in those days and every Saturday during the summer they would have fireworks. Arlo needs to plan on taking the boat out to a nice venue, anchor it, and watch the show. Then just sleep until morning. Fireworks from your own boat is excellent seating. With respects to all americans and earthlings in general,C.
Nothing has come close to the year I was at Chicago’s Grant Park with Buckingham Fountain in the foreground and the firework show happening over the lake. Spoiled me for life.
Been so dry fear of fire overcomes fireworks locally. Thanks to the TV versions and A&J. didn’t know they were here so happy to add them to my collection. Always one of the best cat cartoons. Note: Roger just made the semis at Wimb. again.
We once watched the fireworks from the Skyline on the ridge by the Lake in Epoufette. We could see the ones on Beaver Island, in Manistique, Mackinaw City, Petosky and Mackinac Island. But yeah, through binoculars……Still pretty cool. I was too. 48º. We were inside looking out the window.
When I’m up in Wisconsin we could go the few more miles to Sheboygan and see the fireworks over Lake Michigan. However, we go to the Village of Kohler and listen to a band from Kiel play in a ravine. They play old standards, lots of Sousa pieces and marches from different branches of the service. We get those light-up things for the kids, and they roll down the steep grassy hills toward the tennis court. Finally it gets dark, and then – the fireworks! Good times.
Nebulous: A mile away, the sound would take four and a half seconds to get there. It is a standard way to track thunderstorms, measuring the difference in lightning and thunder.
Snuffy will sit out on the deck tonight with the bride (of 31 years) and watch the show. The display won’t match the sound either, but I’m at home with the ones I love, and a cold one in hand, very thankfull for what I have. Happy Independence Day
I’m sitting here listening to some kid setting off fireworks or something in the several-acre lot behind our house. Husband is watching a 4th of July program on the TV – with Tom Bergeron the emcee. He plays the TV too loud because hard of hearing, but thought I’d let him enjoy the music. Besides, that top-selling British tenor kind of grated. We ate at Sonny’s Real Pit Bar-B-Q,though, and since it’s a holiday I’ve wasted day in front of the computer without guilt. Happy Fourth, everyone!
Nebulous: I was not trying to be picky. There are practical uses for this datum (is the thunderstorm coming or going around and what precautions should we take from that information, for instance).
When I was a kid we used to go to the St. Louis riverfront and watch the fireworks shot off a barge in the middle of the Mississippi River. Brought a picnic in the afternoon and watched waterskiing on the river and such until dark, watched the fireworks and then drove home across the river. They ruined it by making it all glitzy and glamorous and star studded about 15 years ago. You couldn’t pay me to go there now.
It’s 8 days later, but I have to comment: This strip captures the worst fireworks display I’ve ever seen: July 4, 1976, the Bicentennial, in a suburb of Hartford, CT that had never done fireworks before. They seated the audience some awful distance away for safety (Hartford, the Insurance Capital of America, ya know), and then set off one shell about every 15 seconds. I heard a man behind me say “I never thought I’d be bored at a fireworks display.”
Second worse of my life: July 4, 1975, Philadelphia, practicing for the Bicentennial (which I missed; see above). The fireworks were fired with short fuzes too close to the crowds. When it was discovered that flaming debris was falling on people, they cancelled the finale.
Third worse: This year in San Diego. The whole 20-minute show went up in about 15 seconds. We all thought “What a great start!!”, but that was it. I’ve not looked it up in YouTube, but I’m sure it’s there.
Just remember, people: This country was founded so we could be free. Let’s try to get back to that.

I love a good salute. If you hate the USA, we can always take you off our Xmas card list.

This is why I just watch the fireworks on TV, from the couch, with popcorn, and with the AC on, and other convenient facilities just down the hall…
Of course, on the couch, in the back of the pickup was always fun too…

I’m surprised our neighbors didn’t set the neighborhood on fire last night. Looking forward to fireworks tonight over Lake Michigan! =)

That doesn’t seem so far away to me. Did they want the fireworks to shower down over them?
