I still love to catch lightning bugs, especially when they’re flying slowly and are easy to scoop up. If you open your hand, they will just walk up your finger, light up, and fly away.

We don’t have them in Utah. The climate’s too dry or the altitude’s too high. I should take a trip back east one day to see them.

I hope to see a lightning bug one day, before I die.

In my youth we didn’t have a TV. Some of the most fond memories were sitting on the porch with my sibs, mom, and dad in the evening after supper. A beautiful quiet evening with a soft breeze and lightening bugs everywhere. We would collect the bugs in fruit jars. Sometimes we just visited together on the porch. Occasionally, a neighbor or two would drop by and join the gossip fest. Great family times. Modern times have robbed us of a lot.

When I first came to St. Pete in the ’40’s, there were lightning bugs all over the place. Now, none. I saw some in PA about eight years ago. I believe WI has a few, too.

Possibly the funniest moment of my life happened while walking at dusk with an Aussie girl in upstate NY. All of sudden she grabs my arm and points into the woods, terror-stricken. “Wh-wh-what’s th-th-that?!” She thought the fireflies were glowing eyes. Too many horror flicks, maybe? (c:

We still have them here in So. Illinois…my favorite part of Spring is seeing the first ones…

Lightning bug used the kaio-ken attack!

A little Skittish seems to have thornlike protrusions. Pasquale should avoid it. Trifling with that one has a catch to it. Let it go!

I grew up in the midwest catching them, but my children were born in Nevada (too dry, too high) so when we visted relatives back east my 5 year old was amazed and amused by the bugs landing on her hand.

I have to say I did miss them, can’t say the same for fleas, ticks, and mosquitos…..

I love riding on a country road on a warm summer’s night-seeing all the fireflies lighting up the fields. It’s awesome.

My memory was the time one of our resident geckos swallowed one and you could see it blinking for at least a half minute through the gecko’s translucent skin.
