The Buckets by Greg Cravens for September 05, 2012
September 04, 2012
September 06, 2012
Transcript:
When I was a kid, phones had cords, and families had only one. Our cars didn't necessarily have seat belts. And cartoons were only on Saturday morning on TV that only had 3 channels. Grandpa was poor.
Wrong answer kiddo, If you had a phone and a TV you where not poor. For 10 years we had neither, nor missed them. Seat belts was what Dad did if we misbehaved. We got belted.
Anybody within traveling distance to Kenosha Wisconsin- I hope youâve taken note of the box up there to the right, and youâll come see me at the festival. Frankly, Iâd love to seed the audience with Buckets fans, otherwise, itâs gonna be all âPearls Before Swineâ fans, and you know what that leads to.
Iâm a fan of Stephanâs strip myself, of course, I just wanna make sure The Buckets has some good representation there, too. As for the border laws, well, I suppose most folks wish all that hadnât happened, and the few that are glad are pretty unpleasant people.
Everybody was POOR then, compared to what people have now. The fact is, nobody (in this country, anyway) is poor in the sense anymore that it used to be defined, i.e., you donât have a place to live, enough to eat, enough to wear, etc⊠We have so many social services now that the only reason for being poor in the true sense is just that someone isnât aware of what available. Now being poor is defined as not having more than one flat screen TV, as not being able to live an upper middle class lifestyle.
We Were Not Poor!!! That telephone cord could stretch from the kitchen to almost every room in the house! You could get almost 5 gallons of gas for, gee what did I spend? a dollar?. Best (compared to now) was Saturday night at the movies with your pals, including gas for the car and popcorn & drink â $5 each. âŠ. wow⊠forgot how cheap that was.

Well, I suppose in his day, anyone with a TV at all was considered ârichâ by comparison. :-s

Only three channels? I figured Grandpa would be old enough to remember the Dumont Network.

Exactly. Itâs sad, to be honest. Iâve been on the street. Iâve been given second and third chances (I was homeless 2 times).
