Manzano won the silver in the 1,500 meters in London and chose to hold up both the US and Mexican flags after his win. (He was born in Mexico, came to the US without papers at age 4, and became a citizen at 14.) Needless to say, some people had a problem with this. Guess who.

I haven’t the skills that Washington Post columinst Ruben Navarrette has to address this issue so I’ll just agree with his opinion. See

IT seemed OK to me. He probably has lots of relatives in Mexico and since he has dual citizenship, why not. The people who are critical are nit-picking and xenophobia is too rampant here. I hate it when there is such hatred that some people feel toward Mexicans, toward blacks, and anyone else they don’t like. I’m hoping that if Obama wins maybe there will be less hostility in the world. I’m afraid of what it will be like if Romney wins. Differences in cultures are interesting, not threatening. I enjoy this cartoon!.

It was the flag of the confederate states. It was not , and has never been the flag of the United States. The civil war did away with the confederate states. and the Mexican-American war did way with the Mexican rule over much of their northern territory.

The flags have different meanings, but neither says of who we are today.

Please GatoCat, the speaking of English in European countries and various Asian countrys and elsewhere around the world is due to economic reasons and America’s dominance after WWII, NOT goverment mandated rules imposed on their people. You cannot compare the two situations. Please people be aware of world history and think out your arguments before you state them.
