Animals don’t have rights. Rights are a human invention for humans in a social context. They are the standard for human behavior as they prevent the initiation of physical; force when recognized and enforced. Only individuals have rights such as the right to life, liberty and property.

People shouldn’t abuse animals; there’s no doubt about that.

Don’t forget that WE are mammels & therefore, animals. Being mainly carnavores, we eat lesser animals. See Mother Nature for anything you wish changed.

A “bull in a china shop” comes from the sacred cows in India that wander where they will and no one will harass them, since they are sacred. I realize that Ganesha was the elephant god, but an elephant won’t even fit into a china shop.

39 1/2 years ago, someone said to me, “You love animals. Why kill to eat?” I’ve been vegetarian ever since. The question is not whether animals have rights. It’s whether humans have the right to own and exploit animals for any reason other than self defense. Our species does it because we can, not because it’s right. Animals are not ours to eat, wear or experiment on. They are not on this Earth for our amusement or for our convenience. Causing pain and suffering to any living creature, human or not, is wrong.

You just have to read some of the comments here to know that human beings have a long ways to go. As for country and city — I’ve lived in both places, and actually see more wild animals in the city. We have squirrels, raccoons, deer, coyotes, mountain lions and much more here in the city. And I can’t imagine anyone getting a “good giggle” out of any animal abuse.

The ASPCA needs to lobby for new laws: If you are convicted of animal cruelty, it goes on your ID that you are NOT allowed to ever ever own any kind of animal ever. This includes farmers and 4H kids.

Sad but true. Most people only do what makes them money. There is so much cruelty about that it causes actual pain thinking about it, but nothing to the physical and emotional pain for the animal. Rats, laugh! Chimps are only a little bit different than us.Psychopaths hurt animals! Small children don’t know enough to take care of them animal, but they can learn, and should be taught to respect animals as fellow travelers on earth!

That’s the problem, Badfisherman. The moment we see any animal as “lesser” is when we let our ego become more important than the good we can create in society by treating all animals with greater respect and care, be they a part of our families, or ones that are unfortunately destined to become food.
