Her parents could have abandoned her when she was barely a unifoal. Therefore she never met them. This has a strong element of pathos to me, actually.

Unicorns may not require parental care. The father would not participate beyond conception and the mom may leave as soon as the foal was up and grazing. Maybe this species of Unicorn is egg laying. Mom deposits egg and leaves.
