I never have understood why Peanuts was so popular as a comic strip — ‘funny like a crutch’! It’s like beating yourself over the head with a hammer because it feels so good when you stop!
The motor of the strip is Charlie Brown, clearly an analog for Charles Schulz, and his futile quest for friendship, acceptance and love. The very first strip showed a girl hitting him in the eye for no reason.
The strip is violent, to be sure, but that’s in line with comics historically. Check out Krazy Kat. Check out the Katzenjammer Kids. And that’s just the K’s.
Ya, I just wanna chime in too (even though I never do) and say I miss Top Cat’s extra posts. They usually happen at top so you don’t have to read anything else. Especially the ‘I don’t like this stuff, but I’ve gone completely out of my way and wasted my time, and yours, to come here to tell you I don’t like this stuff’ posts.
This has nuth-ink to do with this particular strip, just a heads up to keep Charlie Brown from being devastated should the “Great Pumpkin” not come this year…http://www.wfaa.com/home/Fiery-accident-in-Ennis-leave-hundreds-of-pumpkins-toasted-174617861.html
Glad you liked the Andy Capp strip. That is one of my favourites. Andy looks like he’s going to kill that man judging by his face… and I love how Flo is covering her ears.
Priceless!
I’ll send you more strips if you would like me to.
Peanuts is a GREAT strip!!! I have been reading it for over 40 years and it has always been an enjoyable read. And one that kids could relate to, because we’ve all known kids who picked on others, kids who cared about others, kids who were bossy and rude, and kids who were just plain annoying. Schulz was an artist in every sense of the word and his strips had far more LAUGHS in them than violence. If all you see is violence, that says more about you than it does the strip.
I don’t understand why this particular strip leads to a discussion about violence. There is no violence here. Instead, this is along the lines of someone slipping and falling on a banana peel. Violence would be if Snoopy had pushed the bird, but he didn’t, the bird clumsily fell off on his own in the process of turning around and trying to go south after apparently forgetting he was next to the edge.

Thanks! That explains a LOT about this strip. I’ve NEVER liked it except for Snoopy. If it weren’t for Snoopy, I’d never read it.

Snoopy could just fly him there on his Sopwith Camel

With all the ‘Peanuts’/Shulz fandom here, I’m surprised by what I just read above. Not that any of it is relevant to me.

I think I like all the characters with the exception of Peppermint Patty. Too bad Patty was dropped for her. Snoopy is also my foavorite though.
