A sign of the times - sadly so!

While corny, the strip does make its point. I for one am sick of Chile apples.

Anyway The corn was turned into mash the mash was boiled in the still the still produced some shine the shine was sold to the local kids the local kids got in troublenow they gotta find a whole new way to get into trouble.

Right on the money! In my area, 85% of the Gravenstein apple orchards have been chopped down for housing tracts or vineyards. A hundred times tastier than a red delicious, and soon facing extinction. Many young shoppers have no idea where their food comes from, not just what region, but what grows on a tree vs. what grows on a vine or bush! But there’s no “Q” in Ecuador.

I find it bizarre that people are more intersted in eating out of season veg than eating stuff which actually tastes nice. Most of the apples we get in the UK are either south african, french or south american and they dont taste of anything.

Meanwhile vast areas of UK orchards are being left to rot or are being dug up.

The supermarkets can make as much fuss as they want about caring for the local economy but the bottom line is buy cheap from anywhere and sell for a massive profit.

I hear Travis Tritt singing “Where Corn don’t Grow” in the background.

I prefer my corn in a jar.

Anyone who has ever had fresh sweet corn would never ever go back to corn in a can. YUK!!! Thankfully, where I live, individuals sell all sorts of fruits and veggies at the end of their driveway using the honor system and it seems to work well here. I love getting fresh blueberries, squash, corn, garlic, tomatoes, etc., grown by my neighbors.

Well, were it February, getting locally-grown fruit and veggies might just be a little difficult. Raeside should leave the soap box behind.

You can’t always stop new stores from opening, but you can support your local farmer’s market! My town has one on Saturday mornings.

My corn was a failure this year like the belt just north of here. We slid back into the Moderate Drought class after coming out of Severe during the spring rains. Just got a couple of meals out of it, with another pathetic short ears meal still in the freezer. Only the radishes did well, and good but very short season for tomatoes. Thus ends the North Texas crop report.

We still grow corn in Canada at least for a now .

You can’t grow sweet corn in the US in many areas because the deer eat it before it can be harvested. Our wildlife management practices have produced a huge number of deer and with fewer and fewer people hunting them, it’s a reg’lar plague ‘o deer. Ah, the stately deer, Lyme disease’s best friend. Also, one of the auto body shop’s best friends, too.

Growing up in the Chicago suburbs, we used to have sweet corn only an hour or two out of the fields. I never order it in restaurants or fast food places—compared to the “good stuff”, it tastes like crap.

The best foods to order are usually local.

I make a point to not buy fruits and vegetables from another hemisphere. Should be in season in mine, and hopefully from my country.

Ah I always gets my corn from Jim Beam & Johnnie Walker.
