There’s a very disturbing account in todays NYT from Kurt Eichenwald about the previously unreleased warnings that Bush received from the CIA before the attacks. The neoconservatives around Bush apparently were in total denial, since all they were interested in was Saddam Hussein. So Jeb Bush’s claim at the convention that “he kept us safe” is even more flimsy than we thought — and many of the same neocons are now on Romney’s foreign policy team.
And they are in total denial again! If Obama (or Clinton) wants/wanted to help a country, they’re agin it. But if there is any hesitation, a la Syria (no Arab League interest/support) they are all FOR it! They are scarier than Iran’s nukes!
“Counting down the years since that tragic day….I will never forget what happened.”But also never forget how it could have been avoided and what motivated the attacks. We owe it to those who lost their lives in the attack or rescuing survivors to make sure such a tragedy never happens again.
Howie, you’re an idiot with a completely partisan misunderstanding of history. Bin Laden was known to be dangerous at the time, but not yet a criminal. The Saudis would have been rightly incensed at the extra-judicial killing of one of their citizens. The time to prevent 9/11 was when Clinton told the incoming Bush administration to keep an eye on the ball — no, not THAT ball, this ball — and the CIA told them repeatedly that Bin Laden, not Saddam Hussein, was planning an attack on the U.S. The neocons chirpily told Bush that Osama was completely fooling the CIA, he must be working with Saddam Hussein, which anyone with any knowledge of Middle Eastern politics would have known was impossible. Yet years later we were still hearing from commentators on Fox News about how Saddam Hussein was behind 9/11. Ignorance breeds destruction. The scariest part of the whole episode is that the neocons have learned nothing from facts on the ground, they still think that they were right all along and would do the same the next time.
The Alamo. The Maine. Pearl Harbor. Gulf of Tonkin. 9/11. Why do we keep"remembering" our mistakes, instead of focusing on our moments of wisdom, that did NOT lead to war but averted it instead? The “Cuban missile crisis”. The moon landing that was victory in the “space race”. The Berlin Wall coming down.(That Reagan actually had nothing to do with.)
It is time to stop listening to those who WANT to see the “end of the world”, and instead, listen to those who want to secure and save it.
If you don’t mind gricks, I’ll take this one:“I don’t know where bin Laden is. I have no idea and really don’t care. It’s not that important. It’s not our priority.” – George W. Bush, 3/13/02
I like Howie’s idea that Clinton should have taken out Bin Laden before he had done anything. And how come Teddy Roosevelt didn’t take out Hitler before HE did anything? It would have been easy when Hitler was an infant.
If you were to take a long view look at causes and how it could have been avoided, you’d see that it all started with the Cold War era policy of meddling in other nations’ affairs.“They” hate us because our government constantly puts its nose where it doesn’t belong. “They” hate us because we have infidel troops stationed on holy land propping up a Saudi government that sells us oil. “They” hate us because we propped up a corrupt Iranian government that sold us oil. “They” hate us because we sold Israel the cluster bombs and other weapons used on innocent civilians. “They” hate us and use the training we provided them to fight against the Soviets in Afghanistan.“They” hate us because of our government’s actions in their countries. Once you get that through your heads, you’ll be one step closer to understanding how the 9/11 attacks could have truly been avoided.

Read today’s paper? More proof that Bush knew ahead of time and DID NOTHING!

I’m sure I would if I ever did. What did I lie about?
