Small panel: The Argyle Sweater today has a Cheetos mascot leopard sneezing a bunch of orange dust onto a drinking partner with the same “Gesundheit” caption.

When I was in Germany once upon a time learning German, I was surprised to see the word Gesundheit used as the name of a chapter in a book. That prompted me to find out its meaning; it wasn’t what you might surmise at its use over here in USA.

And Germans are surprised to hear that we say Gesundheit after someone sneezes.

What does Gesundheit mean when translated from the German? Exercise left to the reader, or someone commenting below.

What does gesundheit mean literally? – healthGesundheit was borrowed from German, where it literally means “health”; it was formed by a combination of gesund (“healthy”) and -heit (“-hood”). Wishing a person good health when they sneezed was traditionally believed to forestall the illness that a sneeze often portends.
